<image:caption>Born In Jersey, Channel Islands Richard moved to Brittany France 20 years ago. Escaping from the “Rat Race” he concentrated his efforts on running a landscaping business. During that time he started keeping bees and 12 years later he now completely depends on his beekeeping to produce Honey from his 200 plus production hives , produces annually approximately 120 nucleus colonies and uses the Mini-Plus mating nuc system to raise some beautiful queens he uses in his operation. Richard says “he got the break of a lifetime”: when he got to spend a week at Mike Palmers operation in Vermont in 2015. “I have to this day, only ever bought 3 colonies!” I make all my bees from my own bees” sustainability is key! Richard loves to help others and share beekeeping skills. He also Loves raising queens. His YouTube channel is full of good basic tips on many subjects. “ I relish the chance to help others, I feel I can give something back, Practical help is what most beekeepers really need! Bridging the communication gap will fix many of the beekeeping issue we face.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Dr. Peck is the Director of Research and Education at Betterbee in Greenwich NY, where he assists in product development and research, and also teaches classes and develops scientifically-sound educational materials. His doctoral work in Cornell University's Department of Neurobiology and Behavior was supervised by Professor Tom Seeley. His dissertation research focused on the transmission of mites between bee colonies, as well as the mite-resistance traits of the untreated honey bees living in Cornell's Arnot Forest. After earning his degree he has continued to research varroa/bee interactions, including field work in Newfoundland Canada (where varroa still have not arrived) and Anosy Madagascar (where varroa arrived only in 2010 or 2011). He has served as a teaching postdoctoral fellow in Cornell's Department of Entomology, and is still affiliated with Cornell through the Honey Bee Health program in the College of Veterinary Medicine. Dr. Peck has kept bees for more than a decade, though his home apiary is often full of mite-riddled research colonies so he doesn't usually produce much honey.</image:caption>

He has collected data to understand the annual bee cycle, mapped out the bloom calendar along with the nectar and pollen flows. He loves everything to do with bees/native pollinators and continuously seeks to expand northern best practice beekeeping. His current focus is winter thermoregulation, bee nutrition and bee health. In 2021, he received CAP funding to conduct a Yukon honey origins projects to better understand Yukon/Boreal/Subarctic nectar sources (pollen analysis) as well as the local honey chemical characteristics (NMR). He is also president of WAS – Western Apicultural Society.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Randy McCaffrey has 31 years as a contractor and structural claims specialist. At the age of forty he developed a fascination with honey bees. He discovered beekeeping after assisting his brother who is also a beekeeper, with the live removal (cut out) of a bee hive in an old furniture warehouse. In 2010 armed with his knowledge of construction and his newfound fascination with bees he began removing and relocating feral bee colonies from commercial and residential structures along the Mississippi Gulf Coast. As of June of 2022, the number of cut outs he has done total approximately nine hundred and fifty and swarm catches total approximately five hundred. Randy typically keeps forty to fifty colonies. His family, including himself, his father and his brother, keep approximately two hundred and fifty colonies total. He conducts studies in much of his work such as mite count and disease studies in feral or otherwise chemically untreated bee colonies. He video records much of his work and shares this work through social media platforms such as YouTube, Instagram and TikTok to educate, entertain and inspire current and future beekeepers. His work can be found on most large social media platforms under the channel name 628DirtRooster with the tagline “Where Hobby Beekeeping Is a Way Of Life”. Randy along with his wife Elizabeth are continuing to grow their beekeeping business by recently adding a subsidiary named Coastal Grove Bee Works which will focus on honey sales and a ladies apparel line.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Bees have been a passion of mine for over 20 years, but that passion was never fully realized until I became the lone bee wrangler for a group of Benedictine monks at Saint Joseph Abbey in Southeast Louisiana, about 50 miles north of New Orleans. It was there that I began seeing bees in a different light, a marvel of God's creation. As I had every intention on becoming a monk, and I spent over 12 years discerning that vocation, the prayer life seeped into my everyday life, and this greatly influenced my beekeeping practices. As the fledgling Abbee Honey Operation at St. Joseph was just beginning, as well as my Youtube channel about the bees at the abbey, the flood of 2016 hit, causing over 33 million dollars in damage to the abbey and washing away the 30 hives we had . I had to make the decision, to call it quits or move forward. Well, I chose the harder route and aggressively began building up colonies by doing removals, making splits, and catching swarms. And God blessed the proceedings. We went from zero hives in 2016 to over 200 last year. This year we scaled down to 150 which is where I want to stay. As I said earlier, I discerned the monastic life for over 12 years, but the vows I will be taking at the end of this September will not be religious vows. Instead, they will be marriage vows as I will be marrying Mona whom I met from my Youtube channel. Thank you Jesus!</image:caption>

      <image:title>Chris Werner</image:title>
<image:caption>Chris’ first introduction to bees was as a boy when a swarm moved into a tree in his family’s front yard. Chris’ father called a nearby beekeeper who came and collected the swarm- but she also took time to invite him to learn more about bees. She made time to teach him the basics of beekeeping. After that he kept bees as 4H and FFA projects through high school keeping up to 50 hives. Chris planned to work in the dairy industry but in the 70’s that dream was deflated by the economy and the loss of small dairy farm positions- he was encouraged by older wiser men to try some other kind of work. One night while watching an old Monty Python sketch they commented “Now for something Completely Different” and so the idea came to him that beekeeping would be something completely different to try as full time work. He was able to get a position with a migratory beekeeper who migrated from Wisconsin to Florida and that was the start of his full time career as a beekeeper! He spent several years learning and being mentored by that beekeeper. Then in 1982 he bought 200 nucleus hives and by the time he met Becky in 1985 he had determined that this was the path he wanted to follow. So- Chris and Becky worked side by side and built Indian Summer Honey Farm from 800 hives to a multi generational migratory operation of 4000 hives.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Starting with 2 hives in 1977 while in college his goal was to have 10. By 1982 he had 45 and hit the 100 mark in 1987 just before Varroa. His life long dream since he was 6 yrs old was to be a Professional Auctioneer which he accomlished selling everthing from cattle to tobacco to estates to real estate. However with the internet changing the business he increased his hives to 350 in 2004 then realizing a full semi load was more economical increased to 500 in 2006. In 2010 his son was wanting off the railroad and the plan as to purchase 100 to start at a auction. Hives were going cheap so he kept buying. When he added up the total he was at 714. His son gave his two week notice and the hive count was over 1,200. Always involved in bee associations at all levels Rick has served as treasurer and president of Kentucky Beekeepers, board of directors of ABF and 2 terms on ABF executive board. He was one of several beekeepers who met in Denver Colorado in August 1986 to start the National Honey Board. He won many awards in honey shows before retiring fr9m showing including 4 best of shows at Ametcan honey show, 56 blue ribbons and 12 sweepstakes at Ky Stare Fair. He serves as a judge at the American Honey show along with Hive Alive show. He has pollinated Almonds in Ca, Cranberries in Wi and blueberries in Fl along with orchards in Ky. Now he concentrates on honey production in Ky, Ga and Florida along with supplying several hundred nucs to beeks yearly and raising his queens. <image:caption>In 2013, Curtis Simpson and his wife Tiphani of Beech Grove, chose to change gears from building transmissions and turn his hobby of beekeeping into a family business. "I came home from work one day, and I told my wife, 'I think I want to make this a business and quit my job,' ", “and she said 'You've lost your mind.' " Curtis Simpson got into beekeeping by accident when he ended up with some beekeeping equipment and decided to put out a couple of colonies. The business started with two hives and eventually grew to 700 by 2019. Today, Ranger Bees is a family business that runs around 1,800 hives. Beside making bee sales and selling their own honey, the business makes profit from pollinating crops. From almonds in California, to cantaloupe, pumpkins, watermelons and more in places ranging from California, to Mississippi Curtis Simpson said a lot of travel is involved in the field. The family of four recently celebrated Ranger Bees' 10-year anniversary For Curtis Simpson, it's gone by quickly and he gives the glory to God for keeping the business going. He teaches a First Year Experience course titled “All About Birds and Bees.” He credits his uncle with teaching him how to catch a swarm of bees in the mountains of his youth. Back home in Montgomery, Alabama, a few years after that first taste of honey, Harris caught his own swarm. Jeff Harris found his first love in the Appalachian Mountains. He spent summers working on the family farm in Virginia where one of his uncles kept bees. “I remember coming home with my bicycle in one hand and a branch with a bee swarm in the other. My mother was shocked, but my dad built a box to put the bees in and I’ve kept bees ever since,” he said.</image:caption>

He is also certified in Pond Management and served as Vice President of the South Jersey Bee Keepers Association. His desire is to help develop the next generation of beekeepers and farmers and is looking forward to the opportunity to share his knowledge at Hive Life 2024. The vision of Swazey Farms began in a suburban postage stamp back yard in 2013. A few chickens and a compost pile started the journey for Josue Feliciano and Randy Pearce. Farming in the traditional sense wasnt possible in the shadow of Philadelphia. Land is a scarce commodity in the Garden State and so it took a series of partnerships to make the dream of Swazey Farms a reality. Nine years later, the pair manage 40 hives across five yards in Southern New Jersey. For most beekeepers, the end goal is HONEY. For Swazey Farms, it's all about EDUCATION. Through a variety of on-site and mobile presentations given to civic groups, schools, and curious suburbanites they spread the agricultural bug that bit them so many years ago. Classes are tailored for both children and adults and talk not only about honey bees, but about creating a "farm" of your own. Shattering the notion of needing several acres and a John Deere tractor, they discuss how to live sustainably in your own back yard. Managing space and leveraging partnerships are the keys for success and they share the knowledge they've acquired over the years with anyone willing to listen.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Based in Nashville, TN, Greenwood Honey Company manages around 50 beehives on residential and commercial properties, spearheaded by the dynamic duo, Steven Abernathy and Claire Papevies. Steven, a nationally acclaimed abstract artist, and Claire, with over a decade in TV / film camera work, have combined their talents to create a unique brand with their passion for beekeeping that not only produces exquisite honey, but also tells a visual story through Steven’s artwork on honey bottles. They prioritize establishing trust between producers and consumers, emphasizing the importance of transparency in verifying the worth and pricing of honey in today’s market. Claire and Steven are on a mission to educate people about honeybees and elevate the market value of honey. They believe that the current market, flooded with imported and adulterated honey, undervalues the hard work of beekeepers and the delicate nature of honey. Their goal is to showcase the unique properties of honey and allow consumers to experience its true taste and quality. At Hive Life Conference, Claire and Steven will share insights into the importance of building a brand that represents you and that not only stands out but also helps consumers understand the honesty in the product being delivered. They will discuss strategies to educate consumers about honey properties, emphasize the value of local beekeepers, and inspire others to view honey as the delicacy it truly is.</image:caption>

My first year (by myself) as a beekeeper was a disaster, got myself stung, my wife, my girls, and my dog. After taking my 4th beginner beekeeper class, I received the opportunity to meet Dwight Wilson. He is now and always will be my “beekeeping father & mentor”. He gave me 10 full colonies to learn from and work with. From this time with Dwight and pushing my passion with these awesome creatures, we (wife & I) grew our operation to over 200 colonies; nucs, mating, and full size. Years now, I have cut back to 45 colonies due to work, life, and back surgeries. Since my background is in computer, graphics, video, and audio…this has helped OSBA with outreach. Continuing to strive past covid and onto better education through education. <image:title>Virginia Webb</image:title>
<image:caption>Virginia Webb is a full-time commercial beekeeper and queen producer. For more than fifty years, Virginia has championed the role of the honeybee in helping to sustain global agriculture. Virginia is a third-generation beekeeper. She began beekeeping in 1963 when her father, Joe Stephens, gave her a beehive as a birthday gift. She currently manages more than 200 colonies of bees plus a queen yard. Her apiaries are located in areas suitable to produce the very best Sourwood Honey. Her Sourwood Honey has been awarded five gold medals at the World Honey Show, sponsored by the Apimondia, for Best Honey in the World. She has worked with beekeepers in almost every state and has traveled to Europe and the Caribbean teaching beekeeping for the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture. Teaching others about honeybees and their roll in agriculture is an important service that Virginia has provided for over 50 years. Each year, she speaks to school children, church groups, civic organizations and retirement centers nationwide. Virginia Webb is the only individual in the U.S. to hold three master beekeeper certifications, Georgia, Florida and Eastern Apiculture Society. And is also the delegate for the US at the Apimondia – World Beekeeping Federation.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Tim Schuler</image:title>
<image:caption>Tim Schuler started keeping bees as a young boy with his dad and his brother in Prospect Park, Pennsylvania, a small suburb of Philadelphia. Tim graduated in 1982 from Delaware Valley College, Doylestown, PA with a BS in Animal Husbandry. He began his career helping to manage a large cattle and hog feed lot in central NJ. In 1986 he began working for the New Jersey Department of Agriculture (NJDA) as an Animal Health Technician in the Division of Animal Health. In 1989 and ‘90 Tim served a short time as a bee inspector for the NJDA. In 1991 Tim started a side business managing 300 colonies of honeybees providing pollination services to farmers and producing honey. In 2007 he took the position of State Apiarist with the NJDA. As part of those responsibilities, he taught beekeeping to beekeepers, non-beekeepers and University undergraduates. He inspected colonies throughout the state for diseases and pests, helping beekeepers keep strong healthy colonies of honeybees and promoting New Jersey’s beekeeping industry along the way. In 2013 he had the opportunity to travel to Malawi Africa and help subsistence farmers develop beekeeping as a way to generate income. Since that first trip Tim has returned 8 times to continue this work and brings groups of beekeepers to learn and help. In retirement Tim and his wife Patty continue to manage 200 colonies for pollination and honey production, consulting with beekeepers looking to improve their operation, and helping subsistence farmers in Malawi manage honey bees for profit.Tim loves the fact that keeping bees can change a person’s in real tangible ways.
